Equine Kinesio Taping
The body functions as a Tensegrity, not just one muscle doing one thing.
How does Kinesio Taping Work?
Kinesio Tape is a specially designed tape which acts like a 2nd skin and is applied in a specific way to the body, depending on what results we are hoping to achieve.
It can be applied to boost the positive effects of a Massage Session and target specific areas, or equally as a standalone treatment for reducing edemas, encouraging proprioception, assisting pain relief, supporting joints and improving circulation.
There are a number of factors at work when the tape is applied, but the simplest explanation is that the tape sticks to the hair and skin. This effects decompression, creating additional space below the skins surface. This allows for more oxygenated blood flow, increased lymphatic drainage subsequently encouraging more toxins to be drained out of the system and fresh lymph to flow to the area.Â
K Tape also affects and communicates with the fascia below the skin. By communicating with the fascia, the tape is also communicating with the nervous system and subsequently the brain to effect a change.
In short, we put the tape on the skin. The message is sent up the spinal cord to the brain. The brain encodes the message and sends back instructions to respond (depending on how we've applied the tape and what we are trying to achieve such as pain relief, proprioception etc).
What can I expect from my Kinesio Taping Session?
For the session its very important that your horse is as clean as possible and they must also be dry. The cleaner your horse is, the longer the tape will stick! However tape is most effective during the first 12 hours of application, so don't worry if it does come off after a day or so. For every hour the tape stays on, is another hour of hands on massage!
Tapings will vary as to whether they need to be reapplied depending on what your taping is trying to achieve, but even just one session will have a positive impact on your horse.
There are a variety of different applications available including:
Spinal Tapings
Circulation Tapings
Scar Tapings
Fascia Applications
Accupressure Applications
Organ Support Applications
Nervous System Applications
Thoracic Sling Applications
Joint Support Applications.
Appropriate taping applications will be discussed and decided during your horses assesment/treatment.
